Before the concept of central contracts, cohesion between national and domestic teams frequently ran into financial difficulties. The majority of available board money was often taken by national team players, leaving significantly less for domestic teams and their players.

Due to the seniority-based quota, it was often the case that young players who score countless runs, take wickets, and win matches single-handedly for their clubs were not being compensated according to merit.

If these players demanded better compensation, they were being released. In order to prevent this and strengthen the domestic cricket structure, the ICC implemented a central contract system.

Central contracts will be handed to those who represent their national teams in ICC formats. Each cricket board affiliated with the ICC has its own method for awarding central contracts to players.
